Sandy's Plants began in Mechanicsville in 1979 after a local garden center buyer noticed creeping phlox that Sandy McDougle had saved and lined out at her family's new home. Her children, Ryan and Mitzi, helped dig and deliver the first plants before school and after school.
The official history says the business grew from four production beds into a family-operated nursery with more than 1,500 perennial varieties across over 30 acres. Sandy's daughter Mitzi is CEO, son-in-law J.R. is CFO, and Sandy continues evaluating rare and unusual perennials for regional growing conditions.
Retail customers can visit the working nursery during published business hours, use golf carts and the nursery map to find plants, and compare mature examples in the display gardens. The nursery also supplies landscapers and garden centers in multiple states; retail plant sales are on-site rather than online or by mail order.
